Plastic deformation behaviour of pavement granular materials under low traffic loading

چکیده
This paper analyses the permanent deformation performance of an unbound granular material for base layers of low traffic roads. The material has been subjected to repeated triaxial loads. Three models were fitted to express the cumulative permanent strain as a function of the number of load cycles. In general, the predictions of two models previously studied by other researchers proved to be good but in the long-term, they tended to underestimate the measured values. In contrast, a third new model-the sum of two well known models-offered excellent predictions, which in the long term did not tend to either underestimate or overestimate the measured values. The granular material did not give satisfactory results to be used in low traffic volume road pavements.

Shakedown of unbound granular material
Compacted unbound granular materials are extensively used as sub-layer in pavement design. Most pavement design guides assume that they are responsible for the degradation and deformation of the roads and railways that they support. Biaxial tests are usually employed to investigate the elasto-plastic response of these materials to cyclic loading. A particularly interesting question is whether a...

Granular materials are often used in pavement structures. The influence of anisotropy on the mechanical behaviour of granular materials is very important. The coupled effects of water content and fine content usually lead to more complex anisotropic behaviour. With a repeated load triaxial test (RLTT), it is possible to measure the anisotropic deformation behaviour of granular materials. This a...

Structural analysis of flexible pavements has been and still is currently performed using a multi-layer elastic theory. However, for thinly surfaced pavements subjected to light to medium volumes of traffic, the importance of non-linear stress-strain behaviour of unbound granular materials (UGM’s) requires the use of more sophisticated numerical models for structural design and analysis of such...

One of the methods for the improvement of soil against the tensile stresses is using the artificial supplements in soil such as metal belts or nets, polymer materials and natural fibers. Technically this method is called the reinforced of soil. When a pavement is located on soft soil, great deformations can occur as a result of the crossing of traffic load in superstructure layers of the body....

We investigate the quasistatic mechanical response of soils under cyclic loading using a discrete model of randomly generated convex polygons. This response exhibits a sequence of regimes, each one characterized by a linear accumulation of plastic deformation with the number of cycles. At the grain level, a quasiperiodic ratchetlike behavior is observed at the contacts, which excludes the exist...
